In this week’s Swampcast, the Sun’s Kevin Brockway and Noah Ram discuss the Florida football-Texas A&M matchup and the budding quarterback controversy surrounding incumbent starter Graham Mertz and five-star freshman DJ Lagway.
Lagway opened some eyes in his first career start, throwing for a Florida Gators freshman-record 456 yards and 3 TDs in UF’s 45-7 win over Samford on Saturday. But Mertz is healthy after spending a week in concussion protocol.
Florida football coach Billy Napier said there’s a plan to play both Mertz and Lagway against Texas A&M and that both took reps with the first team in practice this week.
Who should start?
“I personally think after Samford on Saturday, I think it’s now Langway’s job,” Ram said. “I think he earned it, with that performance. Yes it was Samford, yes it’s not a strong opponent but I think he deserves a chance to do it against stronger competition.”
Brockway thinks that Napier will turn back to Mertz as a starter but bring in Lagway in the third series of the game.
“Billy Napier did this in 2018 at Louisiana with two quarterbacks, Andre Nunez and Levi Lewis, when he felt like Lewis was ready,” Brockway said. “That seems like a good way to go.”
