Welcome to this weird, new world we have in 2024 college football. This is a world in which Oregon versus Oregon State is a nonconference game for both teams, played in September. Usually, this would be a Pac-12 football game played at the end of the season in late November just after Thanksgiving Day. Now it’s being played early in the season in a completely different set of weather conditions. Technically, Oregon versus Oregon State — this classic Pacific Northwest rivalry — is now a game on the Big Ten football schedule. It’s a game the Big Ten urgently needs Oregon to win so that the Big Ten can maximize its chances of getting three or four teams into the College Football Playoff. All of this is strange and new and weird, and frankly very hard to process and wrap the mind around. It will take some getting used to, and many people might not ever truly get used to it.
The strange dimensions of this event are magnified by the fact that the Pac-12 is in the process of rebuilding itself. The zombie conference which currently consists of just two schools has finalized a deal to expand to at least six teams in 2026, with the likelihood that it will grow to at least eight schools and very possibly 10, with the additions of Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, and San Diego State. Oregon State will be part of that conference, which is currently a glorified Mountain West but might want to grab teams from the Eastern United States to create a more robust national football brand.
