Texas vs. UTSA preview – 5 things to watch for

No letdown. That’s the mantra echoing through the halls of the Texas Longhorns athletic department this week. Coming off a huge win in Ann Arbor vs. Michigan, the Longhorns will want to keep the program’s considerable momentum going against an undermanned UTSA team.

Last season in Week 2, Texas scored a huge upset in Tuscaloosa over Alabama. Week 3 was Wyoming and the Longhorns struggled in that game for a long time. The score was tied in the 3rd quarter and Ewers passed for only 131 yards. Texas won’t want history to repeat itself on Saturday.

Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian has been using Notre Dame’s stunning loss at home to Northern Illinois last week as a cautionary tale for the Longhorns players. In the past, Texas has been guilty of playing down to its opponent. We’ll see if 2024 is different;

UTSA Defensive Struggles

The Roadrunners have been a Group of Five powerhouse winning 32 games over the last three seasons. In the past, when UTSA has struggled, it’s been against the run. But last week against Texas State, UTSA was torched in both the run and pass defense. UTSA gave up 309 yards passing and two TDs. On the ground, the Bobcats gashed UTSA for 195 yards. If the Roadrunners are giving up 504 yards of total offense against Texas State, they could be in for a long night in Austin.
