Sep. 13—There was a point in Friday night’s game where Blackville-Hilda head football coach Kevin Jones was ready to call a play for star running back Jaquel Holman on fourth down, needing a couple of yards to extend the drive.
It’s a logical choice — Holman, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound University of South Carolina commit, is averaging 8.1 yards per carry this season and has the size, has the strength, has the speed, has the vision to pick up that first down.
He also has all eyes on him, including all 22 of them on the Ninety Six defense on that play.
Quarterback Samari Williams knew that, and he made an offer to Jones.
“I’ll get it, Coach,” he said.
“Coach, he’ll get it. They’re all geared to stop me. Samari will get it,” Holman agreed.
Williams picked up 13 yards. Move the chains, keep the drive going, keep Ninety Six’s rugby scrum of an offense on the sideline.
It wasn’t just that Williams had a huge night numbers-wise — 204 rushing yards, 81 passing yards, four total touchdowns — in the Class A No. 4 Fighting Hawks’ 34-29 road victory over the Class AA Wildcats.
It was when he accumulated those numbers.
Those 13 yards on fourth-and-short. An 18-yard run on fourth-and-6. A roll-out touchdown pass to Brandon Priester on third-and-goal from the 6. A 12-yard pass to Namair Anderson on third-and-3. A 57-yard touchdown run on third-and-7. A 12-yard run on third-and-10. A 14-yard run on third-and-1.
Those are plays that win football games, and Williams made them from start to finish to lead his team to a big victory. For that, he’s the Aiken Standard Player of the Week for Week 3.
“It was the plays he made on third and fourth down. It was so many times in that game, I think seven, maybe, that he picked up a first down on a play,” Jones said. “There were times I would call a pass play, and in the back of my mind I’m thinking,…
