AUBURN — Auburn football hosted New Mexico at Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday in its third straight home game of the 2024 season, with redshirt freshman quarterback Hank Brown making his first start. He replaces Payton Thorne, who threw four interceptions in the previous week’s 21-14 loss to Cal.
Brown threw a touchdown pass to cap his first drive as Auburn’s starter.
Here are three things to know about the Tigers’ new man under center:
Hank Brown played well for Auburn football in Music City Bowl
Brown made his collegiate debut last season but maintained his redshirt status. He completed 7 of 9 passes for 132 yards in limited action against Maryland in the Music City Bowl.
In the 2024 season opener against Alabama A&M, he completed 3 of 5 passes for 96 yards in mop-up duty after Thorne started.
Brown played at a powerhouse high school program
Originally from Nashville, Brown was committed to Liberty but flipped to Auburn, following Hugh Freeze after Freeze took the Auburn coaching job.
He was a three-star prospect out of Lipscomb Academy, where he led the Mustangs to a perfect 13-0 record and a state title as a senior in 2022. Brown passed for 3,264 yards and 47 touchdowns on 73.3% passing. Brown’s 47 touchdown passes rank as the fifth-most in Tennessee state history.
His high school head coach was former NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer, now coach at UAB.
