Updating Illinois rankings in coaches, AP Top 25 polls entering Nebraska game

Illinois rankings update

The Illinois football team moved into the national rankings on Sunday, jumping to No. 24 in The Associated Press Top 25. The Fighting Illini did not make the coaches’ top 25, but is first among teams receiving votes.

The Illini are 3-0 for the first time since 2011, with victories against Eastern Illinois, then-No. 19 Kansas and Central Michigan. Illinois is in the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2022, when they were ranked for four consecutive weeks and reached as high as No. 14.

No. 24 Illinois opens the Big Ten Conference season at 7 p.m. Friday against No. 22 Nebraska at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Neb. The game, which will air on FOX, will be Illinois’ first game between ranked teams since 2008, when No. 12 Penn State defeated No. 21 Illinois, 38-24.

Since 1942, Illinois has an 81-50-2 (.620) record when ranked in the AP Top 25, according to a release from the school.
