CANYON —The West Texas A&M Buffaloes battled in their home opener but couldn’t overcome a tough Western Colorado team, falling 26-17 to the 15th-ranked Mountaineers on Saturday evening.
This defeat, marking their second consecutive loss, leaves WT with a 1-2 record on the season. Despite the fervent support of 6,219 fans at Buffalo Stadium, the game proved to be a challenging one for the home team.

WT started the game with high hopes but stumbled early. After winning the coin toss, the Buffaloes went three-and-out when senior running back Tre’Jon Henderson was stopped short on a critical 3rd-and-1. The Mountaineers quickly capitalized with quarterback Drew Nash breaking a 62-yard run for a touchdown less than three minutes into the game. Although WT’s defense made a notable play with Preston Stezewinski forcing a fumble, the offense couldn’t take advantage, leading to another punt. These missed opportunities proved costly throughout the game.
As the first quarter progressed, the Buffaloes showed signs of recovery. Quarterback Sean Johnson orchestrated a drive featuring an 18-yard scramble and a deep pass to Zorian Stanton, placing the ball inside the Mountaineers’ 10-yard line. On the first play of the second quarter, Johnson scored on a short run, leveling the game at 7-7. The crowd’s excitement surged, as it seemed WT was finding their rhythm.
