How Calvary’s Buddy Mathis realized a dream by committing to play football at LSU

Walter “Buddy” Mathis has always let his play do the talking on the football field as the Calvary Day senior has been an anchor on the Cavalier defensive line since he broke into the starting lineup as a freshman.

The 6-foot-3, 285-pounder has been a star on talent-laden teams that reached the state quarterfinals in his first two seasons, before a run to the Class 3A state semis last season. He had six sacks and 24 quarterback hurries with 44 tackles, including 18.5 for losses to earn All-Greater Savannah first-team honors for the second year in a row.

His dominating ways up front made Mathis a big-time recruit with offers from all over the country, including Alabama and Georgia. He narrowed things down to a final four of Auburn, Clemson, Miami and LSU before announcing on X that we has headed to Baton Rouge on the afternoon of Sept. 6, before Calvary rolled to a win over visiting Southeast Bulloch.

“I picked LSU because of the family aspect of the program,” Mathis said last week. “It’s a close knit team and there’s no facade about what the coaches put out there when they talked with me ― it was the real deal.”

Mathis said he thinks he can have an impact right away with the Tigers and said he is looking forward to joining the program.

“One other factor with LSU was the food they have down there ― it’s dangerous,” Mathis said with a laugh. “But this is something I’ve been working toward since I started playing when I was about five years old ― it’s a dream I’ve been working for.”

Walter Mathis, Jr. of Calvary day pushes through the line to pressure Wesleyan’s quarterback.

The Cavaliers are 3-1 on the season and 3-0 in Region 3-3A play coming into this week’s big region matchup with visiting Jenkins (3-1, 3-0), which is expected to decide the region championship. Mathis has 17 tackles, with four for losses and a sack…
