Texas football rankings: Longhorns No. 1 over Georgia in latest AP poll after UTSA win

For the first time in 16 years, the Texas Longhorns are the No. 1 team in the country in college football.

Following its dominating Week 3 win over UTSA on Saturday, Texas was rewarded on Sunday in both the US LBM Coaches Poll and AP Top 25, jumping up to No. 2 in the former and No. 1 overall in the latter which was announced on Sunday.

It is the first time that Texas has been ranked the No. 1 team in either the Coaches or AP poll since Oct. 26, 2008.

Twelve first-place votes separated Texas and Georgia in the AP poll following Texas’ 56-7 win vs. UTSA and Georgia’s 13-12 victory vs. unranked Kentucky. The Longhorns and Bulldogs will face each other in Week 8 at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium.

The Longhorns moved up one spot in both polls on Sunday after their Week 3 win vs. UTSA. Texas is ranked No. 2 in the Coaches Poll and No. 1 in the AP Top 25. If both teams win out through their Week 8 meeting, it could set up a potential “Game of the Century” — a rare regular-season meeting between the top two teams in the country.
