Does Jacksonville State football’s Rich Rodriguez want play calls back from OT loss to Eastern Michigan

JACKSONVILLE — There is more than one play that Jacksonville State football would want back from its loss to Eastern Michigan on Saturday.

The one that stands out is the second-and-goal play from the 1-yard line in overtime, in which a bad snap got past Tyler Huff for a 27-yard loss. The Gamecocks recovered the ball, starting at the 28-yard-line and Garrison Rippa nailed a 40-yard field goal to send the game to a second overtime. The Gamecocks (0-3) had more miscues and lost after a missed field goal and Eastern Michigan hit their attempt to secure the 37-34 win.

The play had Huff in shotgun, leading to questions of the play call. On Tuesday, meeting with the media for the first time since before the loss to Eastern Michigan, Rodriguez was asked if he would like to have that play call back.

For Rodriguez, there’s usually at least 25 calls, or more each game he’d like back but its not something one can dwell on.

“Oh yeah but there’s probably 25, at least 35 in every game that I would change. You call this, oh you would’ve had a touchdown if you called this, or if you called this you would’ve had a first down,” Rodriguez said. “The what-if game, I think about that all the time, probably too much. I don’t think its good for us, or healthy for me to overthink it, then I just get pissed. There’s the reality, every call that I make, or we make or any of us make that doesn’t have success, I’d like to have over, but you don’t have do overs so that’s part of the deal

Rodriguez also touched on how the thought process that one play can change a close game like the one the Gamecocks were in Saturday is productive, but there’s a few that swing the game. For the Gamecocks, they believe in the 24-our rule, but take longer to make sure those mistakes don’t happen again.
