Gator Nation has already declared the 2024 college football season a failure for Florida, but don’t just take the fans’ word on that front.
CBS Sports recently broke down the five most disappointing teams in college football through three weeks, and the Orange and Blue are firmly in the No. 2 spot after ugly losses to Miami and Texas A&M.
“When every national college football columnist is racing to declare your head coaching tenure over, you know things aren’t going too well,” national college sports writer John Talty said.
“It’s not that Florida struggling was unexpected, but the Gators still make this list for how utterly atrocious they’ve looked doing it. Billy Napier’s time in Gainesville is running on fumes as it is painfully clear to everyone he doesn’t have the requisite skills to turn things around.”
Napier is hanging on to his job by a thread and it’s going to take some serious changes to even reach the four-win total most experts projected coming into the season.
“The most recent indignity came Saturday when Texas A&M, without its starting quarterback, still bullied Florida in a 33-20 win that wasn’t nearly as close as the final score suggested. Florida should never look as bad as it has this year under Napier, and for that reason alone, he’ll soon be out of a job.”
At least Florida’s Week 4 opponent, Mississippi State, is also on this list in the No. 4 spot. If Florida can’t pull out a win on Saturday, they’ll be the unanimous worst team in the SEC.
