Cougars are hard at work during bye week

Sep. 19—The Ada High School football team may not have an opponent Friday night, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be working just as hard.

Ada head coach Wade Boyles said his club is taking full advantage of the extra week of practice. The Cougars begin District 4A-4 play Sept. 27 when Tulsa McClain visits Norris Field.

“The off week for us is still a work week. Just because we don’t have an opponent doesn’t mean we’re taking this week off,” Boyles told The Ada News Wednesday morning. “We’re still focusing on getting our guys prepped and ready and going back to some fundamentals stuff to make sure we’re smooth on everything we’re doing. We’re going to use this opportunity to get better for sure.”

The Cougars had a hard-hitting workout on Tuesday and more of the same was planned for Wednesday before toning things down a bit to end the week.

“We had a real physical practice (Tuesday) and expect another one today,” Boyles said. “Thursday, we’ll still go through our game day prep and walk through stuff as if we were going to play just to keep that routine with our kids. Then on Friday, we’re going to do some conditioning and some drills and then let the kids find some Friday night lights to watch.”

Boyles said he and some of his assistants would probably find a local football game to attend Friday night.

“I think there are several of us who are going to watch some surrounding schools play. We have a lot of good coaching buddies that are around here. There’s always good football on Friday nights somewhere in Oklahoma,” he said.

Missing big plays

Ada had scoring plays of 68 and 61 yards in Week 1 and had TDs of 85 and 74 yards in Week 2. But the Cougars were held out of the end zone in a bizarre 10-2 loss at McAlester last Friday. Ada moved the ball ok at times, compiling 221 yards of total offense, but couldn’t reach…
