Florida football injury update: WR Eugene Wilson III out, WR Tank Hawkins questionable

Florida football will enter its matchup at Mississippi State thin at wide receiver.

Sophomore wide receiver Eugene Wilson III has been ruled out for the Florida Gators against the Bulldogs, while freshman wide receiver Tank Hawkins is questionable, per the SEC’s availability report released Wednesday night.

Wilson, who has 13 catches for 191 yards and 1 TD, did not play last Saturday against Texas A&M’s. Florida football coach Billy Napier wouldn’t disclose the nature of Wilson’s injury but confirmed it occurred late in UF’s 45-7 win over Samford at The Swamp.

“He woke up the next day, and I think we’ve gotten to the bottom of what it is and all that,” Napier said. “So, all good.”

With Wilson and possibly Hawkins out, Florida will lean on transfer receivers Elijhah Badger (Arizona State) and Chimere Dike (Wisconsin), who have stood out so far this season. Badger has 11 catches for 260 yards and 1 TD on the season, while Dike has 8 catches for 146 yards and 1 TD.

“We’re definitely a better team with Tre Wilson for sure,” Napier said. “But I do think Dike and Badger, in particular, stepped up in a major way. We have the ability to in formation plays to get the primary guys in position, much like we’ve done the past. We’ll take what we have each week and we’ll formation it and try to make those guys a primary and secondary.”

Defensive back Aaron Gates and defensive lineman Joey Slackman also have been ruled out after playing last week against Texas A&M. Safety Asa Turner and cornerback Ja’Keem Jackson are still out

Florida (1-2, 0-1 SEC) is facing its first road test of the season at Mississippi State (noon, ESPN). The Bulldogs (1-2, 0-0 SEC) are coming off a 41-17 home loss to Toledo.
