Montcalm football still learning, evolving — and winning

Sep. 19—MONTCALM — Montcalm head football coach Adam Havens had hoped his Generals would be 3-0 at this point in the timeline.

It hasn’t gone entirely according to plan, but things are still moving in a positive direction for Mercer County’s smallest football program.

Headed into Saturday’s 1 p.m. football game at Paden City, the Montcalm is 2-1 overall and coming off of of a 20-17 win over Craig County, Va.

“We won the last two. We had a chance in the first one and just didn’t take care of business,” said Havens, whose squad opened with a 20-14 loss to Buffalo and got back on track with a 52-0 win over Twin Valley.

“We’ve corrected some things and kind of changed our approach and game plans a little bit. It seems to be working,” he said.

Saturday’s game takes the Generals to the northern part of the state, near the banks of the Ohio River, adjacent to the Ohio border in Wetzel County.

Montcalm leaned heavily on its running game in the first week. It worked —but only up to a point.

“Tyler Stevenson had the bulk of the carries and a touchdown run and over 100 yards rushing. Late in that game we felt like we saw some things that we could work toward as far as spreading it out and throwing it around a little more,” said Havens, who deployed more of a spread look against Twin Valley that obviously bore some offensive fruit.

“Jalen Younger really took to that and Tristen Cline at receiver. Jalen has thrown for over 600 yards over three games with eight touchdowns. Cline has over 300 of those and six touchdowns. Those two guys have really come along with the passing attack,” Havens said.

The Generals continue to rely on fullback Jeremy Shrewsbury in a both rushing and passing situations.
