College football previews: Norfolk State visits VMI, Hampton takes on Howard in Washington

Norfolk State (1-3) at VMI (0-3)

When: 1:30 p.m.

On the air: ESPN+, 91.1FM

The Spartans: Norfolk State has shown it’s a capable team but consistency has plagued them thus far in 2024, the perfect example being last week’s 37-7 loss to Hampton. Head coach Dawson Odums said this week he feels they let NSU faithful down and have plenty of motivation to get back in the win column. Norfolk State’s run defense and run offense had been dominant in its first three games, but both failed to show up against HU. Norfolk State will have preseason All-MEAC quarterback Otto Kuhns back from NCAA suspension on Saturday, but Odums emphasized Jalen Daniels (469 yards, three TDs) will remain the starter.

The Keydets: VMI has had a rough start to its second year under head coach Danny Rocco after blowout losses against William & Mary, Georgia Tech and a bout with Bucknell. VMI had four different quarterbacks play against the Yellow Jackets last week with Chandler Wilson getting the start after Collin Shannon sustained an injury against Bucknell. Running back Hunter Rice ranks second in the Southern Conference with 257 yards and three touchdowns.

When: 4 p.m.

On the air: Monumental Sports Network, 88.1FM

The Pirates: Hampton was dominant in last week’s big rivalry win over Norfolk State. The Pirates moved the ball with ease against the Spartans and had no trouble stopping the ball on defense. Quarterback Chris Zellous is coming off the most accurate game of his career, but Boykin said he and Malcolm Mays will continue to share quarterback duties. Hampton enters Saturday’s game on a seven-game winning streak over Howard and has won 21 of the last 25 matchups, including a 14-game win streak from 1997 to 2010.
