Northern Arizona football update: Road swing continues at Incarnate Word

The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (2-1, 0-0) will play their third-straight road game on Saturday (Sept. 21) when they travel to San Antonio to take on the Incarnate Word Cardinals (1-2, 0-0 Southland conference).

Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. MST. The Lumberjacks haven’t played their first conference game, but their two wins (Lincoln (CA) and Utah Tech) and one loss (Arizona) puts them at No. 5 among the Big Sky. Here’s a recap and look-ahead for NAU football.

Last week

NAU took care of business in St. George, Utah, last week, defeating Utah Tech 45-17. The Lumberjacks racked up 339 rushing yards on 44 carries and threw for 221 passing yards.

After a 3-3 start, NAU scored 42 unanswered points until the Trailblazers scored 14 in the fourth quarter.

Ty Pennington got his third-straight start at quarterback on Saturday, and his efforts were enough to be named the Big Sky Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week. The sophomore contributed four total touchdowns, a pair through the air and two on the ground. He completed 8 of 14 passing attempts for 123 yards and ran for 67 yards on nine rushes.

The previous week against Arizona, Isaiah Eastman threw for a touchdown on his first career passing attempt. Against Utah Tech, the junior was on the other end and caught his first touchdown as Pennington found him late in the first quarter for a 31-yard score.

On just the second play of NAU’s next offensive possession, Darvon Hubbard broke free for a 55-yard touchdown. Hubbard tallied 130 yards on 14 rushes.

Ta’ir Brooks caught two passes for 76 yards on the night with two touchdowns. His first came from Pennington on an 8-yard score in the second quarter. Brooks caught his second when Angel Flores subbed in and threw a 68-yard completion to give the Lumberjacks a 45-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
