Penn State football proving points: 4 things to accomplish vs. Kent State

The Penn State football starters may be on the sideline before halftime.

At least that’s what the previous details − and the mammoth point spread − would seem to indicate against overwhelmed Kent State. The Golden Flashes lost one game by 71 points and another to an FCS opponent at home … what will the rested Nittany Lions possibly do to them?

The Penn State plan, simply enough, will be to score early and often and give its top backups as long of a run as possible.

Nevertheless, there is important work on the table Saturday in Beaver Stadium (3:30 p.m., Big Ten Network).

The Nittany Lions will need to lean on more than two wide receivers, sooner than later.

Every prime team pretty much does.

But so far, starters Tre Wallace and Omari Evans have been the only true wideout targets for quarterback Drew Allar. They’ve combined for nine receptions. Senior transfer Julian Fleming has the only other catch, for just 3 yards.

Fleming was pegged as an experienced, productive leader when arriving from Ohio State. Juniors Liam Clifford and Kaden Saunders were predicted to have breakout seasons. Teammates say backups Tyler Johnson and Anthony Ivey have made significant strides.

Saturday must be different, a re-set.
