How did Notre Dame football grade out after home win over Miami (Ohio)?

SOUTH BEND — Saturday was officially the last day of summer, as the 86-degree heat at kickoff could attest.

Notre Dame football, ranked 18th in the US LBM Coaches Poll, took a while to warm up, but order eventually was restored in a 28-3 win over winless Miami (Ohio).

Notre Dame improved to 3-1 with the win over a four-touchdown underdog from the Mid-American Conference.

Boos rained down at multiple points as the Irish struggled to get out of neutral until midway through the second quarter. Riley Leonard finally recorded his first passing touchdown for Notre Dame, hitting fellow transfer Beaux Collins with a 38-yard beauty to make it 14-3 at the break. Leonard also lost a fumble at the end of a 43-yard keeper.

Sixth-year Miami (Ohio) QB Brett Gabbert had time to throw (and throw often) until late in the first half when Boubacar Traore, Howard Cross III and friends started to eat. Junior Tuihalamaka’s goal-line interception (Notre Dame’s fifth takeaway on the year) kept it close while the visitors were running 29 of the first 40 plays from scrimmage.

Jordan Faison, back after a two-game injury absence, muffed a punt in Irish territory; a botched snap scuttled a 51-yard attempt for kicker Mitch Jeter and a penalty wiped out a 40-yard kickoff return on a reverse to Jeremiyah Love. Punter James Rendell finally delivered some thunder with first-half boots of 54 and 53 yards. Freshman Bryce Young blocked a late field goal.
