ZEELAND – No starting quarterback, no problem for the Zeeland West football team.
The Dux stuck to what they do well, using long, time-consuming drives and making key defensive stops in big moments on Friday against Zeeland East in the Bird Bowl, leading to a 28-13 win at Zeeland Stadium.
Brody Maas made the play of the game, and perhaps the season so far for the Dux.
After turning the ball over to the Chix, who marched down to the 2-yard line looking to tie the game, Maas fought through the line and sacked East quarterback Will Drnek on fourth-and-goal and the Dux took over.
“I saw an opportunity. We needed that stop and I just did what had to be done,” Maas said. “This win is a big deal. We fight through adversity. We try to put our heads down and grind with physicality, and it means a lot to us.”

Maas has been the anchor of the defensive line and it showed on the biggest play of the game.
“Brody and Brody (Maas and Smeyers) have been starting for us three years on that defensive line. They are not the biggest guys, but they are so quick and so physical that they make a lot of big plays,” Zeeland West coach John Shillito said.
The Dux used another long, methodical scoring drive, capped by an 8-yard touchdown run by Keaton Hendricks to put the game away with 3:28 to go. Quarterback Drew Albrecht threw the two-point conversion pass to Isaac VanderZwaag for a 22-7 lead with 3:30 to go.
It was big as Zeeland East’s Will Drnek found Coby Miller for a 53-yard pass inside the 5-yard line seconds later, then found Isaiah Boonstra for a touchdown to pull the Chix within 22-13 after West’s Brandon Holman blocked the extra point attempt keeping it a two-possession game.
