LAKELAND — Lakeland waited out rain delays in three of its first four games, but played Lake Gibson on Tuesday night to avoid another weather delay as Tropical Storm Helene continues to churn towards the state. And ducking the weather, perhaps, the only part of the script that Lakeland did not follow during Tuesday night’s district tilt.
The Dreadnaughts actually followed two scripts — on being very familiar to Lakeland fans — in defeating district rival Lake Gibson, 63-0, at Bryant Stadium and challenged a couple team records in the process.
The most important aspect of the victory was Lakeland (5-0), ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, grabbed its first Class 5A, District 6 victory. It also extended Lakeland’s winning streak to 11 games dating back to last season.

The game was never in doubt as Lakeland dominated its rival. The Dreadnaughts have now won four in a row over Lake Gibson after losing twice to the Braves in 2021. Lakeland is now 12-2 in the regular season vs. Lake Gibson since 2005.
Script No. 1 features defense, special teams
Remember how Lakeland surged to a 21-0 lead over Miami Washington last week? Well, it was déjà vu against Lake Gibson.
Lakeland needed just five plays to lead 35-0 thanks to — you guessed it — special teams and defense.
Lakeland recovered a blocked punt at the Lake Gibson 1-yard line on the Braves’ first possession of the game, and Malik Morris ran in for the touchdown on the second play.
Lakeland tackled Lake Gibson’s punter for a 5-yard loss on the next drive and Zander Smith went on to hook up with Shanard Clower for a 14-yard touchdown pass.
