The SEC should be patting itself on the back as the first month of the football season ends Saturday. Six teams are unbeaten, and nine are ranked in the Top 25.
I’m not surprised at that success. But I am surprised at how inept the bottom half of the conference has been at times.
Mississippi State is the best example. The Bulldogs are 1-3, lost to Toledo by 24 points, have lost starting quarterback Blake Shapen to a season-ending shoulder injury, and could be headed for its first 10-loss season since 2003.
Auburn is also headed in the wrong direction under coach Hugh Freeze, who is throwing tantrums on the sideline and throwing his players under the bus afterward. Speaking of “throwing,” what’s the over/under on how many interceptions Auburn throws against Oklahoma?
Arkansas and Florida have distinguished themselves in the first month of the season by not getting their coaches fired. But their schedules portend trouble ahead.
