Today is Sept. 25, 2024. And on this date in Texas history, the Longhorns had no problems scoring in their first conference contest of the 2021 season.

As new head coach Steve Sarkisian introduced himself to the Big 12, Texas scored 70 points in a 35-point win over Texas Tech. Casey Thompson threw five touchdown passes to lead the offensive onslaught while running back Bijan Robinson rushed for 137 yards and receiver Xavier Worthy had a 100-yard, three-touchdown day at Royal-Memorial Stadium.

Texas quarterback Casey Thompson (11) runs the ball. Texas Tech took on the University of Texas at Austin at Darrell K. Royal stadium in Austin, Texas on Sept. 25, 2021.

This marked just the 11th time in school history that Texas scored 70 points in a single game. Over the past 45 years, Texas scored 70 points during just that 2021 shootout with Texas Tech and the 2005 Big 12 championship game against Colorado.

Texas averaged 35.3 points per game during the 2021 season. Those points didn’t always translate to wins, though. The Longhorns went 5-7 and did not appear in a bowl game.
