Austin Peay football picked up its first win under coach Jeff Faris last week. Now the Governors will go for their first conference win.
APSU (1-3, 0-1 United Athletic Conference) hosts Southern Utah (1-3, 0-0) at Fortera Stadium on Saturday. It’s the first conference home game for the Govs, who are coming off a 59-16 win over Alabama A&M.
La’Vell Wright ran for 142 yards and three touchdowns in the first victory of the Faris era. Corey Richardson ran for 102 yards on nine carries to earn UAC Freshman of the Week honors. Romon Copeland Jr. was named the FCS National and UAC Special Teams Player of the Week after he had 152 combined kick return yards and an 82-yard punt return touchdown.
The Thunderbirds were picked to finish third in the UAC preseason coaches’ poll, two spots ahead of Austin Peay. Their lone win came in Week 2 against UTEP, which is coached by Scotty Walden, who left APSU to take the Miners’ job last December.
Last season, Austin Peay beat Southern Utah 48-45 in double overtime, rallying from a 21-point deficit in the third quarter.
