Ole Miss football rankings: How far will Rebels fall in top 25 after loss to Kentucky?

The 2024 college football season was setting up to be a once-in-a-generation event for the Ole Miss program, with a high-powered offense, a restocked defense and a No. 6 national ranking that had the Rebels rightfully dreaming of conference and national championships.

On Saturday, that road to glory encountered an obstacle.

Against a Kentucky team over which it was a 16.5-point favorite, Ole Miss suffered its first loss of the season, with Caden Davis shanking what would have been a game-tying field goal in the final minute to cement a 20-17 setback for coach Lane Kiffin’s team.

Prior to facing the Wildcats, the Rebels hadn’t just won games, but dominated, getting to a 4-0 record by a combined score of 220-22.

Coach Mark Stoops’ team stood firm against Ole Miss, though, holding a Rebels team that had been averaging an FBS-leading 670.8 yards and 55 points per game to 353 yards and 17 points. The 17 points were Ole Miss’ fewest in a game at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium since 2019.

Though there are larger, more pressing questions about what kind of impact the loss will have on the Rebels’ dreams of making the College Football Playoff, there’s the immediate intrigue of how far Ole Miss might fall in the national polls when they’re released Sunday.
