5 reactions/overreactions from Cincinnati Bearcats Big 12 road loss at Texas Tech

Saturday was the first night football game of the 2024 season for the University of Cincinnati Bearcats. It also was their first road loss this season as they came up three points short in a Big 12 game in Lubbock to Texas Tech, 44-41.

The Bearcats had a final possession with 1:52 left where a touchdown would win or field goal would tie. After a curious set of circumstances, they lined up for a 51-yard field goal that went wide right as time expired.

Cincinnati Bearcats coach doesn’t mince words on late 10-second run-off

When quarterback Brendan Sorsby slid at the end of a run and two defenders dove in head-first, targeting was initially called. The play was reviewed and reversed with the flag picked up, costing UC a controversial 10-second run-off. Under college rules, if there was no flag, he would have been down and the clock would continue to run. Whether the flag would have helped UC, no one will ever know.

“He calls the penalty, they end up taking it up, yet we still get penalized 10 seconds,” UC coach Scott Satterfield said. “We got screwed on that one, any which way you look at it. You’d love to have a little bit of extra time there at the end because I thought we’d have an opportunity to go down and probably get it in the end zone.”

So, with UC at 3-2 (1-1 Big 12) and seven league games to play, is the Bearcats glass half-empty or half-full?

Overreaction: The 3-3-5 was carved like a Texas brisket. That’s not totally inaccurate but the Bearcats did force…
