Could the Big Ten and SEC disrupt the new College Football Playoff contract in 2026?

It’s pretty clear that the two best conferences in NCAA college football are the Big Ten and SEC, and for teams like Notre Dame, they’re at a disadvantage when it comes to the College Football Playoff.

In a report by ESPN’s Heather Dinich, it seems like the two conferences will make a run at each of them getting four automatic bids to the CFP when they restructure its new contract in 2026. She goes on to say that there will be in-person discussions between the two conferences in Nashville, Tennessee next week about the potential change.

It’s hard to imagine that the CFP committee would agree to this, as most likely the majority of non-automatic bids will go out to members of those conferences anyways. When you look at the US LBM Coaches Poll following Week 5, there are eleven schools between the two of them that are ranked inside the top-12. The Miami Hurricanes are the only team not in either of those two conferences currently in the CFP range.

Watering down the potential for other teams to make the playoff just doesn’t make sense. The committee will pick the best teams available this year and next, and shouldn’t be forced to adhere to these two conferences demands.

As for the Irish, they’re already at a disadvantage by not being able to get a first-round bye, and if this were to pass, it would make it much harder for them to be involved, as just four at-large bids would be available.
