Alabama-Georgia becomes most-watched regular-season primetime college football game since 2017

Last Saturday, Alabama and Georgia treated fans across the country to one of the best college football games not only of the 2024 season, but of the past decade, if not the 21st century.

The highly anticipated matchup of top-five teams had quite the audience, too.

The Crimson Tide’s 41-34 victory against the Bulldogs last weekend at Bryant-Denny Stadium averaged 12 million viewers on ABC and peaked at 14.1 million viewers, the network announced Monday.

It was the most-watched regular-season primetime college football game on any network since 2017 and was the most-streamed college football game on record for any of ESPN’s family of networks.

Only one regular-season game in 2023 drew a higher rating than Alabama-Georgia — Michigan’s 30-24 win against archrival Ohio State last November, which averaged 19.1 million viewers on Fox.

To put that 12 million figure in context, there are a combined 15.7 million residents between Alabama and Georgia.

Coach Kalen DeBoer and the Tide held on for a victory despite squandering a 30-7 lead in the third quarter before a thrilling 75-yard touchdown pass from Jalen Milroe to Ryan Williams with 2:18 remaining gave it back the lead for good. With the win, Alabama moved up two spots to No. 2 in the US LBM Coaches Poll while Georgia slid from No. 1 to No. 5.
