Danny Stutsman says OU football is ‘trying to get healthy’ on bye week before Texas game

NORMAN — OU football star linebacker Danny Stutsman is staying busy during the Sooners’ bye week.

Stutsman, the program’s leading tackler through five games, made an appearance on “The Paul Finebaum Show” on Wednesday. Stutsman discussed OU’s defensive play this season, last week’s 27-21 win over Auburn and what the team has gotten up to during the bye week.

Here’s some of what Stutsman said:

On last week’s win over Auburn

“It was a great road win, it was really needed. But now we’re onto the bye week, trying to get healthy and excited for the next week to come.”

On how OU football is handling bye week

“Everyone gets a bye week, but not everyone utilizes it the same way. Here at OU, we’re keeping the main thing the main thing. Obviously, we’re trying to get our bodies better, trying to get healthy for next week, but also making an impact in the community. Yesterday we went and did some community service around Norman, which was really great. We went to some foster cares, and we made care packages for them. That’s just something Coach Venables does that really separates himself from all the other coaches in college football.”

On giving back to the community during bye week

“We split up into different groups and did different things. Myself, a few other guys and Coach Venables went to a foster home, and hung out with them for like, two, three hours, and really got to experience it, show and be there for them. These kids are coming from really hard upbringing and life, and be able to come back and spend the day with them show them there are people that care for them. And it’s a huge impact. It might be a little thing to us, but to them, I’m sure they’ll remember that moment for a long time in life. You’ve got to try and find ways to give…
