Whether the weather will be a factor during the rest of the football season, no meteorologist in Ohio is going to make that prediction, so it’s going to be up to coaches to be nimble.
Last week started as it’s been for most of the season — warm and dry — but by midweek it looked like a rainy Friday was going to be in the offing. Turns out it was more than just a little precipitation, but the remnants of Hurricane Helene pelting north central Ohio.
For Northmor, head coach Scott Armrose appreciated his team’s ability to roll with it. What the Golden Knights had in mind to start the week certainly wasn’t what went into the Friday night action plan.
“It was a game I appreciated. The old wing T coach came out in me,” Armrose said with a laugh.
The KMAC’s most prolific passing attack led by All-Ohio quarterback A.J. Bower and his receivers was largely grounded. They were 4 of 14 passing for less than 40 yards. So the numbers of Carson Campbell and Cowin Becker were called early and often in 19-6 victory at Fredericktown.
“We couldn’t throw the ball; we just couldn’t do it,” the coach said. “We could not effectively get our passing game going. We couldn’t grip the football. It was a sloppy mess. The field was like a swamp. By the second half, it was hard to get any footing. We had to take care of things up front on both the offensive and defensive lines, and we did that. We definitely changed our approach once the game got going.”
Campbell ran 24 times for 135 yards and scored on touchdown runs of 13 and 29 yards. Becker added 56 yards on 10 carries and scored from 33 yards away.
