Notre Dame football loses QB recruit Deuce Knight to Auburn

SOUTH BEND — Deuce Knight, the talented dual-threat quarterback from a small town in Mississippi, spent roughly 54 weeks as the mercurial front man for Notre Dame football’s 2025 recruiting class.

Early Wednesday evening, that strained association came to a long-rumored end.

Knight flipped his nonbinding commitment from Notre Dame to Auburn, according to On3.com. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound left-hander confirmed the report via his social media.

Located about a four-hour drive from Knight’s hometown of Lucedale, Miss., Auburn welcomed the top-30 recruit three times in the past month for football weekends. Knight made unofficial visits on Aug. 31 and Sept. 7, then followed up with an official visit this past weekend.

Although Auburn, under coach Hugh Freeze, has struggled to a 2-3 start, losing to California and Oklahoma with Knight in town, the pull of remaining in the Deep South proved too strong for Notre Dame to overcome.

Knight, who also reportedly considered switching to nearby Mississippi in recent weeks, is rated as a five-star prospect by 247Sports Composite and is considered the No. 5 quarterback in the 2025 recruiting class.

His public pledge to Notre Dame came on Sept. 18, 2023, days before the Irish were to face Ohio State. Knight received his Notre Dame offer that March, and he was on campus for visits at least four times in the past 18 months, including an official visit in mid-June.

Noah Grubbs, a four-star quarterback prospect in the Class of 2026 from Lake Mary, Fla., gave his nonbinding pledge to Notre Dame on June 1. Grubbs was in attendance last Saturday for Notre Dame’s 31-24 win over Louisville.

The Irish will lose starting quarterback Riley Leonard after this season, but they are well-stocked at the position…
