Chuck Foreman makes first cut as Senior candidate for next Pro Football Hall of Fame class

Chuck Foreman, the legendary Frederick High alumnus and Minnesota Vikings stalwart, is among 60 former NFL players who advanced Wednesday to the next phase of voting for the Senior category of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

For many years, Foreman was not considered for the honor, the highest a former player can receive. And that fact bothered — at times angered — the former All-Pro dual-threat back of the 1970s.

But changes happened over the past several months with how cases are reviewed for Senior candidates — those whose playing careers ended 25 years ago or more.

Just weeks ago, it was announced that a new Senior Screening Committee was formed to help vet résumés and create a list for the nine-person Senior Blue-Ribbon Committee to consider for the Class of 2025.

Couple that with an aggressive push this year by Foreman, a team of marketers and his fans to finally get his credentials in front of the right eyes, and suddenly his candidacy has true hope for the first time since he retired 44 years ago.

“It’s certainly an honor to be in the top 50 or 60,” Foreman, 73, said Wednesday via text message to the News-Post. “I’m very happy about it and just hope for the best.”

Previously, his name had never made it to a list that officially sat before the Senior Committee.

When Foreman recently learned of that, his frustration led him to collaborate with professionals in hopes of better spelling out his historic accomplishments and unique place in history for those who make decisions regarding membership in the Canton, Ohio, football mecca.

Contextualizing his qualifications, they created a video brochure and dossier that were disbursed to those who might be involved in the selection process for Senior candidates.
