Jackson State football heads to the Alabama coast as the Tigers play their second SWAC game of the season in the Gulf Coast Challenge.
Jackson State (3-2, SWAC 1-0) will be in Mobile as it faces Alabama A&M (2-2, 0-0) on Saturday (4 p.m. ESPN +) at neutral site Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
The Tigers come off their first SWAC game of the year after a 43-14 win over Texas Southern. Alabama A&M had to reschedule its first SWAC game against Florida A&M due to Hurricane Helene. That game has been pushed back to Nov. 29.
Here’s a look inside the matchup.
Will Jackson State QB Jacobian Morgan stay consistent in third start of 2024?
Despite only getting starts in Weeks 1 and 5, Jacobian Morgan has appeared in every game for JSU due to Cam’Ron McCoy’s injuries. After Morgan had two passing and two rushing scores and185 yards passing and 96 rushing last week, coach TC Taylor gave him the start against Alabama A&M.
On the year, Morgan has 855 passing yards, 111 rushing yards, 10 touchdowns, and two interceptions.
Can Jackson State’s defense continue its tough presence?
JSU’s defense held Texas Southern scoreless until the fourth quarter, when they gave up two touchdowns late. But the Tigers held Texas Southern to 223 yards of offense. Defensive coordinator Torenzo Quinn has credited linebackers Reid Pulliam and Joshua Nobles, who have 58 tackles combined. Nobles has a team-high five sacks.
JSU’s defense has not given up more than 21 points since its 30-14 loss in Week 1 to ULM. In the Tigers’ 41-20 loss to Grambling, the defense allowed 20 points as the offense gave Grambling 21 from turnover scores.
