UCF lost one of its most versatile, explosive offensive players in the days leading up to its road trip to Gainesville.
Junior slot receiver and kick returner Xavier Townsend decided to opt out for the remainder of the 2024 season to preserve his eligibility, with intentions of entering the NCAA transfer portal in December, he said Thursday in a social media post.
“First off, I would like to thank my coaches and entire UCF family for the opportunity to further my education and be a part of this great football tradition,” Townsend wrote. “It was not an easy decision, but after deep thought and much prayer, I’ve decided to use my redshirt year and will be entering the transfer portal.
“(Head) Coach (Gus) Malzahn, (offensive coordinator Tim) Harris and the entire staff have been great mentors as well as coaches. I will value every lesson I have learned over the last two-plus years. I will miss my teammates the most as they have turned into my brothers. I wish you guys the best and will be pulling for you guys to win every game. I appreciate fighting alongside you guys. GKCO.”

Townsend is not the only Knight who has chosen to redshirt ahead of their 7:45 p.m. Saturday showdown with Florida, UCF’s first visit to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium since 2006. Defensive back Bryon Threats informed coaches of his decision to sit out and transfer Thursday night, according to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
Rivals and 247Sports reported earlier in the week that reserve safety William Wells will sit out the remaining eight games.
