Northwestern’s football team is back on track.
Brock Shank threw five touchdown passes to lead the Tigers past Wabash 40-6 Friday night in a Three Rivers Conference game at Northwestern.
The Tigers improved to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the TRC. They were coming off a 42-2 loss to Maconaquah last week.
“Last week was a sour taste in our mouth and we knew that we had to have a good week of practice,” Northwestern coach Caleb Small said. “To be honest with you, we had a lot of excuses to make going into the Maconaquah game and during the Maconaquah game. Our coaching staff and our kids didn’t make any excuses this week. They came to work on Monday.
“It wasn’t an easy week, by any means,” he continued. “We named this week our ‘culture week’ — that we got out-cultured last week and we’re not going to let that happen again.”
Small said he challenged the Tigers to play physical and tough against Wabash.
“That’s something we have to continue to get better at as we get into the playoffs, however we took a step in the right direction [Friday] with the program,” he said.
Shank picked apart the Apaches (1-6, 1-5) with his latest big game. The Tiger senior completed 15 of 22 passes for 288 yards and his five touchdowns. He has 1,975 yards and 21 touchdowns in six games played.
“I thought Brock played really well,” Small said. “He took what the defense gave him.”
Shank spread his passes around. Hayden Cook had four receptions for 114 yards and his 12th touchdown of the season, Michael Groves had five catches for 76 yards and two touchdowns, Cavan Murray had four catches for 64 yards and a score and Armani Jackson had a 21-yard TD catch.
