Week 6 Polk County football action: Victory Christian, Lakeland, Mulberry stay undefeated

Victory Christian (6-0) continued to stay perfect thanks to the Cru Slocum show and a 49-30 win over Kathleen on Friday night.

Slocum, Victory Christian’s sophomore quarterback who protected well by the offensive line led by senior right guard Gavin Priest, racked up five total touchdowns — including a 47-yard touchdown scamper on just the second play of the game. He also had touchdown passes to senior wide receiver DJ Sanders, sophomore wide receiver Andrew Morrison, junior running back Zyrell Thomas and junior wide receiver Tucker Fox.

All-County secondary MyShawn McKinley and Jozia Scott each scored touchdowns, with Mckinley scoring an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Senior defensive back Jalin Gray also logged an interception.

“Definitely proud of the team, but we know we have more work today,” Victory Christian head coach Kendrick Stewart said.

Kathleen sophomore running back Xavion Mitchell had two rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown.

Lakeland 28, Sumner 0

Lakeland continued its quest for a third straight state title Friday on the road as the Dreadnaughts blew out Sumner thanks to Lakeland pass catcher Jerry Thomas, who posted three touchdowns — two from senior quarterback Zander Smith and one from junior quarterback Chad Williams.

Senior running back Jordan Henderson registered a rushing touchdown, too.

Defensively, it was the third shutout of the year for Lakeland (6-0).

“Great team win,” Lakeland head football coach Marvin Frazier said. “Now we have to refocus for our toughest test of the season: Sebring. They’re really good on offense and defense. Going to be tough.”
