New Hampstead senior Gianna Brown made headlines last spring as the winner of the Hollis Stacy Award given to the most versatile female high school athlete in Savannah.
An athlete must play three sports to be eligible for the honor, but Brown plays four. She is a standout in basketball, soccer and volleyball for the Phoenix, but her favorite sport is flag football ― and she has committed to play that sport at the college level for Emmanuel University, a Division II school in Franklin Springs.
Last season, Brown was an All-Greater Savannah Flag Football first-team selection as she starred on both sides of the ball for a Phoenix squad that reached the Class A-4A State semifinals. As a linebacker, she pulled 117 flags and had three interceptions ― returning one for a touchdown. On offense, she had 513 yards receiving and 13 scoring catches. She was an All-State selection, Area Defensive Player of the Year and New Hampstead’s team MVP.
New Hampstead Flag Football Coach Trey Lanier also coaches Brown in basketball. In just her second year playing the sport last season, she was an All-Greater Savannah first-team pick as the 6-foot post player averaged 20.6 points and 11 rebounds per game.
“Gianna has size for a girl, but she’s also deceptively fast,” Lanier said. “I have two girls on the (flag football) team who run sub five-second 40-yard dashes, and Gianna is right there with them running a 5.1. She goes sideline to sideline on defense and has the long arms to pull all those flags. And nobody can guard her as a receiver ― when there’s a ball in the air, she’s going to go up and get it.”

Lanier said the sport is growing quickly, and he’s glad he’s had a chance to coach…
