Pitt QB Eli Holstein named Walter Camp offensive player of the week

PITTSBURGH – Pitt redshirt freshman Eli Holstein – the first Panthers quarterback to win his initial five career starts since Dan Marino in 1979 – has been named the Walter Camp national offensive player of the week for his performance in the Panthers’ 34-24 victory at North Carolina.

Holstein compiled 457 total yards and accounted for four touchdowns against the Tar Heels. The Panthers are 5-0 for the first time since 1991.

He threw for a Pitt freshman-record 381 yards (25 of 42 passing) with three touchdowns and one interception. Holstein also was the Panthers’ leading rusher with 76 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.

This is the latest honor Holstein received for his North Carolina performance. He previously earned ACC rookie of the week, Davey O’Brien Award “Great 8” and Manning Award “stars of the week” accolades.

Widely regarded as the nation’s top freshman quarterback, Holstein is quickly gaining acclaim as one of college football’s elite signal-callers regardless of class.

On the season, Holstein has completed 66% of his passes (113 of 172) for 1,567 yards and 15 touchdowns with three interceptions. He is Pitt’s second-leading rusher with 265 yards and three touchdowns on 48 carries.

Holstein ranks third nationally in total offense (366.4 avg.), fourth in points responsible for (21.6 avg.), fifth in touchdown passes (15) and eighth in pass yards (313.4 avg.).

The Panthers, ranked No. 22 this week, host California at 3:30 p.m. Saturday on ESPN.
