Vanderbilt fraternity’s banner predicted how Diego Pavia would knock Alabama football down

David had a sling, we have Pavia.

Those words on a banner hung outside the Sigma Nu fraternity house at Vanderbilt last week predicted what would happen in Saturday’s game against No. 1 Alabama.

Sigma Nu likened Commodores quarterback Diego Pavia to the biblical story of David and Goliath, where a young shepherd named David takes down a giant Goliath using a sling. Fraternity brothers hung the banner last Tuesday, then left it up through the weekend.

Later on Saturday, Pavia’s performance became the stuff of legend as he led Vanderbilt (3-2, 1-1 SEC) to a 40-35 upset of Alabama, the team’s first win over a top-five opponent in program history.

The fraternity members also made a second banner. This one said “shock the world” and they brought it into the stadium, where it was later shown on the SEC Network broadcast.

Kostas North, a member of Sigma Nu, grew up in Houston. Many of his friends attend Texas or Texas A&M, where it’s common for fraternities to hang banners making fun of opponents or cheering on their school. Part of the motivation for making the banner was to show support to Pavia and the rest of the football team after losing games to Georgia State and Missouri.

“We, the student body, really, really care about about the success of the athletics department,” North said. “When you come to Vanderbilt to play football, you might not get all the media time that Alabama does or Tennessee does, but there’s a section of students that care just as much.”

After the win, North was among the students who tore down a goalpost in the south end zone and marched it down Broadway and to the Cumberland River. A new goalpost has now been installed at FirstBank Stadium.
