Ligonier Valley’s John Jablunovsky finished tantalizingly close to the 1,000 rushing-yard milestone in this past week’s victory at Charleroi.

The senior running back enters the Rams’ Week 8 game Friday at South Park (6-1) with 999 rushing yards this season. Ligonier Valley is 3-4.

“He’s one yard shy of 1,000. After the game, we didn’t realize how many yards he had,” Ligonier Valley coach Roger Beitel said of Week 7’s 20-14 win. “I knew he needed 195 for 1,000.

“He had 194.”

The 5-foot-11, 163-pound Jablunovsky is a four-year veteran with 2,693 career rushing yards and 30 TDs on the ground. This season, he’s collected 12 rushing TDs while averaging 7.6 yards a carry.

“The thing that makes John real special is his explosive speed,” Beitel said. “He’s a threat to go the distance every time he touches the ball. This year, his carries have been up.

“He’s really produced some big games.”

Jablunovsky rushed for 210 yards and three scores in a 34-27 loss to Jeannette in Week 3. In addition to his nearly 200 yards this past week, he also produced a 190-yard game in a 40-28 win against Shady Side Academy in Week 4.

Jablunovsky has rushed for more than 100 yards in five of seven games, as the Rams compete in the District 7 Class 2A Section 1. He has 1,353 all-purpose yards.

“John has that elite track speed, and eventually he’s going to break one,” Beitel said. “Once he gets out in the open, there are very few people that can catch him.

“Playing in the WPIAL, he’s never been caught, and on the defensive side, he’s run down some very elite athletes and showcased that outstanding speed he has.”

A defensive back, Jablunovsky has 47 tackles, one interception and caused three fumbles this season.

On the track, he tied for fourth with a 6-foot-2 high jump in the 2023 PIAA…
