NORMAN — Quinn Ewers is officially back.
Texas’ starting quarterback, who missed the last two games with an abdominal strain, will make his return and start vs. OU on Saturday in the Red River Rivalry, Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian announced Thursday. Ewers was listed as probable on Wednesday night’s SEC student athlete availability report.
In Ewers’ absence, backup Arch Manning shined in consecutive victories over Louisiana-Monroe and the Bulldogs, throwing for a combined 583 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. Ewers completed 73.4% of his passes and tossed for 691 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions in the Longhorns’ first three games of the season, which included a road win over Michigan on Sept. 7.
Michael Hawkins Jr. is set to become the first true freshman quarterback in Sooners history to start against Texas.
OU is not expected to return wide receiver Deion Burks who was listed as questionable to play after suffering a soft tissue injury vs. Tennessee, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Thursday. The SEC’s next student athlete availability report will release Thursday night.
