So long, NLI: National Letter of Intent eliminated by NCAA

City View’s Emarei Brandon officially signs her national letter of intent to play volleyball for North Central Texas College in Gainsville.

In what’s been an ever-evolving landscape, the college football landscape once again saw a significant change. The NCAA Division I Council approved to eliminate the National Letter of Intent Program.

This change goes into effect immediately and starts with the 2025 class. In lieu of the NCAA’s $2.8 billion settlement in the House vs. NCAA lawsuit, schools can now share up to $22 million yearly with their student-athletes.

That will come as soon as the start of the 2025-2026 school year.In 1964, the NLI began. It was a legally binding agreement between players and the college they were signing with, preventing other schools from contacting them. In return the schools were legally bound to providing financial aid for one full academic year.

With this decision, things will drastically change. Student-athletes and their schools will sign a scholarship agreement as well as a financial aid agreement. This will essentially streamline the signing process reduce confision between NLI and NCAA legislation.

Schools can now manage those athletic aid agreements, allowing them to comply better with recruiting commitments.

This is also not likely the last major decision to come from the House vs. NCAA decision. The evaluation of the recruiting calendar could be next on the table.

The Early Signing Period was moved up this year. It went from mid-December to the week before conference championship games, with the first day coming on Dec. 4.
