Can the Oklahoma State football season be saved? Here are 3 reasons why it can or can’t

STILLWATER — The first six games of the year for the Oklahoma State football team felt like two separate seasons.

The Cowboys looked like a top-20 team that handled its business through non-conference play, including a strong rally to beat a better-than-expected Arkansas squad.

And the same group of Pokes have looked hapless for most of the last three games, all losses.

Which team will step to the forefront in the second half of the season? Can these Cowboys make it to six wins and keep their 18-year bowl streak alive?

The optimists and the pessimists have their takes, so let’s give them each the floor, taking a look at reasons to believe, or not believe, OSU’s season is salvageable.

Here’s a look at three reasons for each:

Three reasons the Cowboys can save their season

The schedule

OSU opened Big 12 play with Utah and Kansas State, its two toughest conference opponents, at least based on what is expected and what has been proven so far. West Virginia looks like a middle-of-the-pack squad, so that loss is more concerning.

But from here, the schedule gets more friendly.

The Oct. 18 game at BYU, a Friday night showdown in Provo, Utah, isn’t as easy as it might’ve once looked. But Baylor, Arizona State and TCU aren’t all that scary.

After that trio of games, the Pokes get another week off before taking on a Texas Tech squad that is hard to pinpoint right now, and a Colorado team that is both talented and volatile. So trying to project what kind of challenge the Buffs will be on Black…
