Northern Arizona football update: Lumberjacks looking for redemption at Montana

The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (3-3, 1-1) are heading back on the road Saturday to visit Missoula where they will take on another Big Sky opponent, Montana (4-2, 1-1).

Kickoff is at 1 p.m. MST.

The Grizzlies are No. 14 in the latest AFCA FCS Coaches Poll, which ranks teams in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision. The Lumberjacks will try to move up the rankings with a win in Montana after losing a close one to Idaho last week. Here’s a recap and look ahead for NAU football.

Last Week

After trailing 20-10 at the end of the half, NAU did not allow another touchdown and outscored Idaho 7-3 in the second half. But the comeback wasn’t enough as the Lumberjacks were handed their first Big Sky loss 23-17.

Quarterback Ty Pennington completed 12 of his 17 pass attempts for 114 yards and a touchdown before exiting the game in the first half with an injury. PJ London took over and threw for 82 yards and two interceptions. He also ran for 16 yards and scored his first career rushing touchdown.

Before leaving, Pennington found Bryzai White for a 50-yard touchdown pass. White led all receivers on the day with 72 yards and the one score, and J’Wan Evans led on the ground with 35 yards on six carries. On defense, Tommy Ellis led the team with nine tackles, including one for a loss.

From the Coach

“I was really proud of our team’s fight in the second half. I wasn’t proud of a few things in the first half. When you’re playing a really good football team like this in their place, you have to put four quarters together and I don’t know that we did that totally. We made some mistakes and turned the ball over, you can’t do those things. But I’m really proud of our team’s fight at the end,” said head coach Brian Wright post game, according to an NAU news release.
