INDIANAPOLIS – Purdue football’s already struggling offense expects to be without its starting quarterback Saturday at Illinois.
Per multiple reports, Hudson Card is in concussion protocol and will not play against the No. 23 Illini. Gold & Black first reported the news. Big Ten teams release official availability reports on game days.
Card is in his second season as the Boilermakers’ starter. Through five games he has completed 63.4% of his passes for 738 yards with seven touchdowns and four interceptions. Those numbers are heavily propped up by a 24 of 25 passing performance in the season opener against Indiana State.
Redshirt freshman Ryan Browne is expected to start in Card’s absence, as he did last season at Northwestern. Browne completed 12 of 16 passes for 104 yards in that game and also rushed for 85 yards.
Purdue’s offense is one of the worst in the nation against FBS competition, averaging 4.61 yards per play (120th) and ranking last in first downs (10.3), 130th in third down percentage (23.4) and 120th in red zone attempts.
Purdue defeated Illlinois 44-19 in Ryan Walters’ first game against the program where he formerly served as defensive coordinator. The Illini opened as a 17.5-point favorite for Saturday’s game. The line has grown to 22.5 at some sites as of Friday morning.
