High school football: South Jefferson puts on complete performance to continue strong season

Oct. 12—ADAMS — Fittingly on senior night, the South Jefferson football team kept up the pressure on both sides of the ball on Friday.

Just like they’ve been doing all season, the Spartans maintained a steady pace from the start, which paid off in a 48-6 victory over Oswego in a Class B2 Division game on their home turf.

“We have a complete offense, for sure,” South Jefferson coach Aaron Rivers said. “We’re able to run and throw the ball when need be and our defense is dominant like it was last year, so we try and build off that.”

Quarterback Brayden Miick threw a pair of touchdown passes — both to Kaleb McCargar — and running back Gavin Warner ran for a pair of scores — all in the first half — to spark South Jefferson, which improves to 4-1 on the season, including a 3-0 start in the division.

“It’s nice, it’s a special group, we’ve been playing together for a while,” Spartans senior Bobby Piddock said. “It’s good to see that a lot of the kids were on JV last year or a couple years ago to come up and play with us. We’ve got a couple new kids, too, that never played football before, it’s a good attitude to have, we’re a tight group.”

“It just feels great, it being possibly my last home game ever, it feels great to win it,” McCargar, also a senior, said. “So a good feeling being with all my friends that I’ve played all the way through high school with.”

And the Spartans’ aggressiveness has been by design as coming off a breakthrough season in which they won eight games last year, the team installed a no-huddle offense during training camp.

“We’re a tempo team this year so we don’t huddle, we just try and get as many plays in as possible in a game,” Rivers said.

This move has paid dividends for South Jefferson offensively and that was the case again Friday as it scored on its first four possessions of the…
