The four plays that decided annual showdown between Boylan and Hononegah

Two Boylan players looked at each other as Hononegah’s line-drive kickoff sailed between them. Anthony Lorenzo then raced back 20 yard, scooped up the ball and raced through a wall of confusion into the clear.

Only one player stood between Lorenzo and a wild kickoff return for a touchdown that would have tied the game. Brayden Lane made the tackle.

“We were rushing down there so hard that our pursuit overran that,” Hononegah coach Brian Zimmerman said. “That was very scary because we only had one guy back there to stop it. There were several plays like that where the game could have gone one way or another.”

Here are the four plays that decided Hononegah’s 17-7 win over Boylan on Friday, which set up a showdown at undefeated Belvidere North next week for the NIC-10 football title.

Aiden Jarvis’ brotherly help

Boylan was stopped at Hononegah’s 25 on its first drive and had a first down on Hononegah’s 1 on its second drive after a 40-yard pass to Joe McNamara and an 8-yard run by co-quarterback Jaden Williams on 3rd-and-2. Boylan then lost seven yards on the next two plays, was penalized five yards and threw an interception on 3rd-and-13.

“We are still looking for that little bit of an identity to muscle our way through there,” Boylan coach John Cacciatore said. “We didn’t have it. We came up a yard short.”

The biggest play in that exchange was Aiden Jarvis stopping Williams for a 5-yard loss on second down. That helped Brady Jarvis, who was in coverage on that long pass to McNamara.

“It was amazing. My brother made a mistake, but we pursued through that,” said Aiden Jarvis, who finished had a game-high four tackles for loss. “It was just amazing teamwork we had during that goal line (stand) to stop…
