Bowlan paces Pelham in win over West

Oct. 13—MANCHESTER — Justin Bowlan plays three offensive positions for the Pelham High School football team.

That’s three more than he played on offense last fall.

Depending on the play call, Bowlan, who only played defensive back last year, will line up at wide receiver, running back or as the spread-formation quarterback.

The senior ran for three touchdowns and caught another in the unbeaten Pythons’ 49-22 Division II West Conference victory over Manchester West on Saturday at Meisel Veterans Memorial Field.

The win marked Pelham’s 47th straight overall.

“Justin’s electric,” acting Pythons head coach Justin Hufft said of his versatile playmaker.

Bowlan took a counter handoff 81 yards down the far sideline to the end zone on the first play from scrimmage in the second half to break a 6-6 tie.

It was Pelham’s first of six straight second-half drives that ended with a touchdown.

Bowlan said he felt that score sparked his team after a sluggish first half.

Bowlan also ran for two 32-yard TDs on quarterback keepers as part of his game-high 179-yard rushing day on 10 carries. He also caught a 28-yard TD pass from quarterback Kevin Hardy with 9:27 left in the third quarter to help build a 22-6 Pythons advantage.

Hardy, a junior, is Pelham’s QB when it runs plays out of its usual Wing-T formation.

When the Pythons want to spread things out, they turn to Bowlan.

Bowlan, who missed one game with a right knee injury, primarily ran on keeper plays against West (4-2) while he was the quarterback.

He played the position all through his youth football days with the Pelham Razorbacks program.

“Earlier in the year, it was tough trying to knock off the cobwebs but now I feel really comfortable and I like it,” Bowlan said of playing QB again.

Hufft said it is advantageous…
