What Purdue football coach Ryan Walters said about Hudson Card and Ryan Browne

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Purdue football coach Ryan Walters does not know how soon Hudson Card will be back from his reported concussion symptoms, but he knows Ryan Browne delivered in his absence Saturday at Illinois.

Browne, a redshirt freshman making his first career start, collected 415 yards and three touchdowns in a 50-49 overtime loss. His rushing and passing performance brought new life to an offense which had trudged along during the first four of a now five-game losing streak.

Walters said Browne benefited from a full week of preparation and acted as QB1 in practice all week.

“He prepared his tail off all week — spent extra time with us,” Walters said. “You know, spend extra time with us. … He brought some energy, some juice, and executed the game plan. I’m really proud of the way he played.”

Purdue plays at Oregon on Friday. That short week could potentially complicate any player’s ability to be cleared for return from injury. In Card’s case, he would need to clear specific concussion protocol criteria in order to return.

After Oregon, the Boilermakers are off one week, then play Northwestern at home.

Card is in his second season as the Boilermakers’ starter. Through five games he has completed 63.4% of his passes for 738 yards with seven touchdowns and four interceptions. Those numbers are heavily propped up by a record-setting 24 of 25 passing performance in the season opener against Indiana State.

There were no indications in preseason camp that Browne or anyone else seriously challenged Card for the starting quarterback job.
