By his own admission, Jordan Mott never thought he would have made it onto the field at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum decked out in Penn State gear after running out with USC’s team before its game against his beloved Nittany Lions.
Something he likely expected less? Getting a call from his team’s head coach praising him for doing so.
Four days after Penn State’s 33-30 overtime victory against USC last Saturday, Mott received a video call on his phone from Nittany Lions coach James Franklin, who was as amused as much of the country was that a Penn State fan managed to run out of the tunnel with the Trojans team wearing the opponent’s colors.

Mott and his wife were able to do so by taking advantage of a game-day experience package USC offers to fans. For $1,800 apiece, they were able to get 60 minutes of pre-game field access, which was capped off by getting to follow USC as it ran onto the field before kickoff. Because of that, Mott and his wife were navy blue specks in a sea of cardinal and gold, and with Penn State coming onto the field after the Trojans, they effectively got to lead the Nittany Lions onto the field.
USC’s page marketing its game-day experiences now includes the following caveat:
All participants must be in USC apparel to partake in Game Day Experiences. USC Athletics reserves the right to remove individuals who are not compliant.
A video Mott posted of the experience on Instagram went viral, with more than eight million views as of Wednesday. It caught the eye of Franklin, who reached out to Mott in a video Penn State posted to its official account on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
