Nick Saban knows what it’s like to be in Alabama football coach Kalen DeBoer’s shoes.
The legendary Alabama coach said he felt similar when he took over the Michigan State football program in 1995 from coach George Perles, who had led the Spartans the previous 12 seasons — five of which were with Saban as defensive coordinator from 1983-87.
“He had a lot of people who really believed in what he did: the discipline, the culture that he created and all that,” Saban said Friday on “The Pat McAfee Show.” “So when I went there, I was expected to do things almost exactly like he did because I had been on the staff. But through the years, I’d learned some other ways to do things because of Bill Belichick and people like that. Sometimes I felt a little like, ‘Why aren’t you doing it a certain way?'”

When he thinks about the transition DeBoer continues to face with the Crimson Tide, leading Alabama to a 5-1 record ahead of Saturday’s rivalry date with Tennessee, Saban called it “tough,” but one he has to do himself.
“I don’t want to be judgmental about what they do because I think he has to do what he does his way,” Saban said. “He can’t be me, he can’t try to be somebody that he isn’t. And I think there’s more than one way to skin a cat.”
Saban said one thing that is not mentioned with Alabama is that 26 players transferred after Saban’s retirement.
In five seasons as a head coach, DeBoer has led Fresno State, Washington and Alabama to 42 wins in 52 games.
